St Rule Trophy 2013

2012 Champion: Laura Murray, Scotland

Laura Murray won the St Rule Trophy for the second time in three years after a two shot victory on the Old and New courses.

The 23 year-old from Alford continued her fine form after her win in the Scottish Women's Amateur Championship to post a seven under par total of 220, two shots clear of Emma Goddard from Royal Liverpool.

Murray won the St Rule Trophy after a play-off in 2010 but her path to victory was slightly smoother this time round. She shared the lead after a 73 in the first round on the New Course and then moved two shots clear of the field after a second round 74 on the Old Course. An excellent birdie on the par-five second and an eagle three on the 13th on the Old Course were among the highlights of the final round as Murray maintained her lead in fine style.

Murray became only the fourth person to clinch the national title and the St Rule Trophy after Catriona Matthew (twice), Anne Laing and Heather Stirling.

"It was my putting that pulled me through," she said. "I holed an awful lot of good putts over the three rounds. From round about the 10ft range I hardly missed anything."

Three players tied for third behind Goddard - Louise Kenney from Pitreavie, Jenny Haglund from Sweden and Bethany Garton from Royal Lytham, whose six under par 70 in the final round on the Old Course was the best of the week.

Garton's clubmate Emily Taylor won the Lawson Trophy for the highest placed girl under-18 after finishing in a tie for seventh place on 225.

Scotland came out on top in the team event with Murray and her team mates, Eilidh Briggs from Kilmacolm and Jane Turner from Craigielaw, posting a 446 total, two ahead of runners-up England.
